L6 Summer Work

Over the summer, you should be completing any coursework and tasks set by your subject teachers. In addition, you should work on consolidating your Lower Sixth learning. Suggested tasks are listed by subject below.

N.B. Some boys will be made aware that consolidation work in a subject is compulsory and will be checked on their return to school.

Art

All boys should be developing their A-level coursework project over the summer holiday. This should include observational drawing, artist studies, experimentation and, ideally, some standalone works. For those who did not meet the objective of 10 completed A1 sheets by the end of the summer term this will be compulsory to ensure they have 10 sheets minimum by September.

Biology (A Level)

  1. You are strongly encouraged to use the SoW to prepare detailed notes on Photosynthesis and Genetics.
  2. All students should expect some form of ‘welcome back’ test, which is intended to force you to review the L6 content.
  3. Boys who hope to increase their UCAS grade will need to both:
  • show Mr Beale the notes made on the topics listed in 1 a.
  • Prepare themselves for a viva on these topics.

Business

On top of the compulsory summer work, complete the past papers on your OneNote pages. Complete them in the following way. First, with closed books and under time constraints. Secondly, in a different pen make additions and amendments using any resources you like (apart from the mark scheme). Finally, mark the papers in a red pen using the mark scheme. The important thing is not how well you score in any of the stages, but rather that you fully engage with the process.

Chemistry

Please refer to your class OneNote. Your teacher will provide personalised specific revision exercises for you.

Greek Theatre (EEB): Please skim read the plays you have been given. Please read ‘Greek Theatre in Context’ in its entirety. Ensure all introductory pages in the Theatre section of OneNote have been completed.

Geography

Expected work - Choose at least 2 learning grids from the list below on topics from the course so far. You should select the topics you did less well in for the end of year exam, these should be agreed with your class teacher. Submit fully completed learning grids in September.

Learning Grids:

Recommended work – Engage with the tasks on firefly focused around transition to the U6 geography.

History

See Firefly page here for many helpful documents on how to plan and structure essay on China and Russia. First, you should revise content, then, second, practice writing questions under timed conditions without notes, and then apply the mark scheme. Identify a target for yourself and write it at the top of your sheet before beginning with your next one. One essay per week would mean several under your belt before starting (even better prepared) in September.

Maths

Please refer to the Maths Firefly page for guidance.

Music Technology

Philosophy (IB)

Complete or plan past papers/questions under exam conditions. Revision resources and course outlines can be found on Firefly here.

Paper 1: There are resources such as question banks for Paper 1 that will be useful for pupils engaging with revision tasks. Pupils should use their time to plan responses to stimuli or direct questions using the command terms guide on the same page.

The Aquila Challenge on Firefly contains a long list of extra reading and resources that pupils can use in their engagement with wider reading and preparation for the examinations. Pupils will also see a guide to wider reading in Philosophy found on this page for further suggestions.

Physics

The recommended approach for Year 12 Physicists can be found via this Firefly page.

Politics

Your summer work should begin with a file check, so that gaps in your notes, or weaker areas, can be identified. You should focus on revising content from your updated notes, also making shorter revision notes as you go. You might find the Tutor2U quizzes helpful when carrying out ‘recall’ tasks.

An additional important aspect of your work at this stage should also include completing a number of exam-style questions in timed conditions, ideally after having just revised that topic. If you complete one essay per each of the eight topics in the UK Politics (Component One) & UK Government (Component Two) modules, and an additional essay for each of the Political Ideas modules, you will have twelve essays in total. This is quite a lot, but we would recommend completing 4-6 essays at least over the summer. Use the mark scheme documents and other guidance to evaluate your performance, highlight where the three assessment objectives have been met, and propose your own mark for each answer, with a short explanation to follow.

See Politics firefly page for links to the main Politics revision tables and guidance documents. The longer document contains detailed guidance on topic and module content, likely exam questions for each section of the specification, and advice on structuring individual revision sessions. You will also see a link to a file check sheet.

Wider reading is important in Politics, and you will find useful recommendations in the two documents here: Politics reading and extension (Note: ‘Reading and Listening’ is the more accessible document, initially, but do look at the university document, also).

Religious Studies

Pupils should review course outlines can be found on Firefly here. Revision materials for Philosophy of religion here. Religion and ethics here.

Using the ‘learners should have the opportunity to discuss’ bullet points on the specification:

Pick a section of the specification you intend to revise. Using the ‘learners should have the opportunity to discuss’ bullet points on the specification start to use your knowledge of command words to create your own questions. For example, ‘To what extent…’ or create statement that is able to be discussed.

Plan as many of these questions as you can. Remember that scholars, sources of wisdom, developing a line of reasoning and your knowledge and understanding of the topic should be evident in your plan. Choose some questions you have created to write a response and then use the mark scheme to evaluate your work.

The Aquila Challenge on Firefly contains a long list of extra reading and resources that you can use in your engagement with wider reading. You will also see a guide to wider reading in RS found on this page for further suggestions.
